Saturday, August 12 2017 Some screen captures from underwater video of one of the multiple targets we chose to investigate with the camera mounted ROV. While it bears some similarities to the Nike booster rockets used in Avro Arrow test program, our initial assessment of this target is that it is the rudder from a ship.

The attached montage has three overlapping sonar images from the lake bed search area. The images were collected at the beginning of August as part of a reference test, to see what a fully intact free flight model sitting upright on the bottom would look like in the sonar images. We constructed a two dimensional full scale model of one of the targets from plywood and covered the dummy with aluminum sheeting, weighed it down with a cement block and lowered it to the bottom of the lake. The image produced by the ThunderFish over the approximately 4 metre x 3 metre dummy is quite clear, particularly the sonar shadow of the body and tail fin. It also gives a sense of the small size of the target relative to the complex and highly variable lake bottom topography.

The radar-guided missile, believed to be approximately 8 feet long, was created in the 1950's as part of a series of missiles fired from CF-100’s jets during the development of the Arrow project, but like the fighter jet project, the missiles were also cancelled.
